# Create your Outpost account

Sign-up creates your Outpost account and its owner. When you finish this page
you have a verified account, and the next step is choosing your plan and your
Outpost address. It takes a few minutes and needs no payment method unless you
choose to subscribe without a trial.

## Before you begin

- **An email address you will keep.** It becomes the account owner's sign-in.
Privacy relays, anonymous mail services, and disposable addresses are
refused. See [Email addresses Outpost does not accept](#email-addresses-outpost-does-not-accept).
- **A mobile phone that can receive text messages.** Outpost verifies mobile
numbers from the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, the EU,
Australia, and New Zealand. Landlines and internet phone numbers are
  refused.
- **Your organization's legal name and mailing address**, or your own mailing
address if the account is for yourself. The address is needed for invoices
  and sales tax.
- **The plan you want**, if you know it. A sign-up button on a plan at
outpostplatform.com carries that plan into the wizard, and the plan step
preselects it. See [Plans and limits](/account/plans-and-limits/).

There is no password in the Outpost portal. You sign in to it with a code sent
to your email address, or with a passkey. The one password you set is for your
own console, when your Outpost is ready.

## Start the wizard

1. Open the [Outpost portal](https://core.outpostplatform.com/portal/) and
   select **Create an account**.
2. On **Welcome to Outpost**, select **Continue**.

If you were invited to finish a setup that Outpost prepared for you, the
wizard shows **Welcome! You are completing setup for** and your organization's
name. Follow the same steps.

## Enter your name and email

The wizard creates your sign-up account at this step and sends a code to the
address you enter.

1. On **Your account**, in **Your name**, enter your name.
2. In **Email**, enter your email address. The wizard checks it as you type
and shows **This address can be used.** when it is accepted. If it shows a
   message instead, see
   [Troubleshoot sign-up and sign-in](/account/troubleshoot-signup/#email-address-messages).
3. Read the **Terms of Service** and **Privacy Policy**. Each link opens in a
   new tab.
4. Select the checkbox that reads **I agree to the Terms of Service and
acknowledge the Privacy Policy. Create my signup account and send a
   verification code.**
5. Select **Create signup account**.

Before it creates the account, Outpost runs a Cloudflare check that the sign-up
comes from a person. It usually finishes on its own while you fill in the form.
If Cloudflare wants more, a checkbox appears above the buttons; select it. If
the page shows **Checking that you are a person. This takes a moment, then try
again.**, wait a few seconds and select **Create signup account** again.

## Verify your email address

1. On **Check your email**, enter the 6-digit code from the email in
   **Verification code**.
2. Select **Continue**.

The code expires 10 minutes after it is sent, and each code allows 5 attempts.
If it has not arrived, check your spam folder, then select **send a new one**.
You can ask for a new code once a minute, and up to 5 times in 24 hours.

## Verify your mobile number

1. On **Your mobile number**, in **Country**, select the country of your
mobile number. The wizard adds the country's dialing code for you.
2. In **Mobile number**, enter the number without the country code.
3. Select the checkbox that agrees to receive text messages from Outpost. Its
**Terms** link opens the text messaging section of the Terms of Service,
and its **Privacy Policy** link opens the Privacy Policy.
4. Select **Continue**. Outpost texts a 6-digit code to the number.
5. On **Check your phone**, enter the code in **Verification code**.
6. Select **Continue**.

To correct the number after the code is sent, select **Use a different one**.

:::note
Outpost staff can turn phone verification off, for example during a text
messaging outage. When it is off, the wizard skips this step. Your account
asks for a verified mobile number at your next sign-in after it is turned back
on.
:::

## Say who the account is for and where its mail goes

1. Under **Who is this account for?**, select **For an organization** or
   **For myself**.

**For an organization**: you accept the Terms on the organization's
behalf, and the page asks for its details. Home Lab is not offered to an
   organization.

**For myself**: you accept the Terms as an individual, and the page asks
only for your mailing address. Choose this for Home Lab.

The choice is not shown when you arrived from a Home Lab sign-up button,
which is always for yourself, or from an invitation, which is always for an
   organization.

2. **For an organization**, under **Business**, enter the **Legal name** and a
**Display name**. **Website (optional)** is optional.
3. Under **Mailing address**, enter **Street address**, **City**, **State or
province**, and **Postal code**, and select the **Country**. **Suite, unit,
   floor (optional)** is optional.
4. Select **Continue**.

## Review and accept

1. On **Review your details**, check the account and address details. Select
**Edit** beside a section to change it.
2. Select the acceptance checkbox.

**For an organization**, it reads **I am authorized to bind** followed by
the legal name you entered, then **On its behalf, I agree to the Terms of
Service and acknowledge the Privacy Policy.**

**For yourself**, it reads **I accept these Terms for myself.**

3. Select **Agree and complete signup**.

## Choose your plan

1. On **Choose your plan**, select a plan card. Each card shows the plan's
price, its trial, and its limits. **Home Lab** appears only for an account
   you are creating for yourself.
2. Select **Continue**.

The next page is the last step of sign-up: your Outpost address. Continue with
[Choose your Outpost address and region](/account/outpost-address/).

## One account per organization, one trial per person

- **Work email domains.** An organization gets one Outpost account, matched by
its email domain. When someone at the same domain has already completed
sign-up, the wizard refuses a new one and says so. Ask the person who set
up your account to invite you to the console instead.
- **Personal email providers**, such as Gmail or Outlook.com, are not an
organization, so the domain rule does not apply. Instead, each verified
email address and each verified mobile number can start one free trial. A
second trial is refused at the address step, which then offers
  **Subscribe now without a trial**.
- **Home Lab** is limited to one per person, by verified email address or
mobile number. See [Home Lab terms](/account/home-lab/).

Starting the wizard again with an address whose sign-up you abandoned is
allowed. The wizard sends a new code and you walk the steps again.

## Email addresses Outpost does not accept

Outpost accepts work addresses and personal providers such as Gmail, Outlook,
and iCloud. It refuses:

- **Disposable addresses**, with **Please use an email address you will keep.
Disposable email addresses are not accepted on Outpost.**
- **Privacy relays and anonymous mail services**, with **Use an email address
from a provider other than a privacy relay or anonymous mail service.**
This covers, among others, Proton Mail, Tuta, Apple Hide My Email, Firefox
Relay, DuckDuckGo Email Protection, SimpleLogin, addy.io, riseup.net, and
  disroot.org, including their subdomains.

Outpost refuses these because every sign-up must use an email provider that
can respond to legal process about who signed up.

## Verify

When sign-up and the address step finish, the Outpost portal either takes you
straight into your new console, or shows **Your Outpost is ready.** on the
dashboard with a link to your Outpost address. If your Outpost is still being
set up, the dashboard shows **Deploying your Outpost.** and takes you there
when it is ready.
