# Edit a diagram in the diagram editor

Outpost includes a diagram editor, so you can change a documented network
diagram in the console without exporting it, editing it elsewhere, and
uploading it again. The editor is draw.io, served by your Outpost. It works
the way draw.io does, and adds libraries of Outpost devices and link styles.

The editor runs isolated from the rest of the console and makes no requests
outside your Outpost. Your drawing is not sent to draw.io or anyone else.

## Before you begin

- You need `network_map:edit`.
- The diagram must exist. See
  [Keep documented network diagrams](/network-maps/documented-diagrams/).

## Open the editor

1. On **Endpoints** > **Network map**, select the **Diagrams** tab and open
   the diagram.
2. Optional: select **Show live values** to load today's status, addresses,
VLANs, and ports onto the devices and links linked to the network.
3. Optional: enter a **Note for the next save**.
4. Select **Open in editor**.

The editor opens over the whole console, with the diagram's title, **Save**,
and **Close** in the bar along its top.

## Draw

Draw as you would in draw.io. The shape panel has these libraries:

| Library | Holds |
| --- | --- |
| **Outpost devices** | One shape per device kind, and one per custom icon in your [map style](/network-maps/map-styles/). |
| **Outpost links** | One connector per kind of link, styled as your map style draws it, such as single-mode fiber or a VPN. |
| draw.io's own | General, network, Cisco, and rack shapes. |

Devices and links on a diagram made from the live map are linked to what they
stand for. A linked shape carries its device's details, and Outpost uses that
link to check the diagram. Move, restyle, and relabel linked shapes as you
like. If you delete one and draw it again, the new shape is not linked, and
Outpost matches it to a device by its name and addresses instead.

## Save or close

- **Save** writes the drawing as a new revision, with a picture of it for the
diagram's page and for PNG, SVG, and PDF exports. The bar shows **Saved**,
and the diagram's page shows **Saved as revision** and its number. Outpost
checks the new revision against the network within a few minutes.
- **Close** leaves the editor. With changes not saved, it asks **Close without
saving your changes?** Select **Discard changes** to leave, or **Keep
  editing** to go back.

The bar shows **Unsaved changes** while you have changes not saved yet.

## Verify

On the diagram's page, **Revisions** lists the new revision at the top with
**Current**, and **Current revision** shows its picture.

## If something goes wrong

| Message | Fix |
| --- | --- |
| **The editor did not load. Close it and try again.** | Select **Close**, then **Open in editor** again. If it still fails, reload the console page. |
| **The editor settings could not be loaded.** | Check your connection to your Outpost, then close the editor and open it again. |
| **This Depot was built without the diagram editor.** | Your Outpost does not include the editor. This happens only on a self-hosted deployment. See [Self-hosted and air-gapped deployments](/get-started/self-hosted-and-air-gapped/). |
| **The diagram could not be saved. Your drawing is still open; try Save again.** | Your changes are still in the editor. Select **Save** again. |
| **You do not have permission to do that.** | Ask an owner to add `network_map:edit` to your role. |
