# Pioneer AI and the Outpost documentation

Pioneer AI can look things up in this documentation site when you ask how
Outpost works: what a feature does, which plan includes it, or how to set
something up. It answers from the page rather than from memory, and links the
page it used so you can read it yourself. This page explains how it works,
what keeps your clients out of its searches, and how an owner turns it off.

This is Outpost's own product documentation. Your team's documentation and
knowledge base are separate, and Pioneer AI searches them with its own tools.
See [Use Pioneer AI](/pioneer-ai/use-pioneer-ai/).

## How it works

1. You ask a question about Outpost, such as "How do I set up Wake-on-LAN?"
   or "Which plan has PSA billing?"
2. Pioneer AI searches this site with general terms, such as
   `wake-on-lan setup`. Outpost checks the query before it leaves your Outpost
   (see below).
3. Pioneer AI reads the page that answers the question, or the one section of
   it that does.
4. The answer links the page under **Sources**. Each page's plans, platforms,
   and permission come from the same availability box you see under its title,
   so an answer about which plan includes a feature matches this site.

Pioneer AI reads pages only from this site. Page text is treated as data, not
as instructions.

## What a search may never contain

Before a query is sent, Outpost refuses it if it contains:

- the name of one of your clients (names of 4 or more characters);
- the hostname of one of your endpoints;
- an email address;
- an IPv4 or IPv6 address;
- your console's own address.

Pioneer AI then searches again with general terms. You see the refused attempt
as a failed tool card. The same check applies to
[web search](/pioneer-ai/web-search/#what-a-search-may-never-contain).

## What is kept

The conversation keeps only the title and address of each page Pioneer AI
found or read. The page text is used for that reply and is not stored.
Searches go to this site's own search service, which Outpost runs, and to no
other provider.

## Limits and cost

| Limit | Value |
| --- | --- |
| Searches in one reply | 5 |
| Pages read in one reply | 5 |

Searching and reading the documentation is free on every plan and every AI
source. It does not appear on **Settings** > **AI** > **Usage**.

## Turn it off

It is on by default. An owner turns it off for everyone:

1. Go to **Settings** > **AI**.
2. Turn **Outpost documentation** off.
3. Select **Save**.

With it off, Pioneer AI answers questions about Outpost from what it already
knows, and can be out of date.

[Remote Outpost](/remote-outpost/) never contacts Outpost, so Pioneer AI does
not search this site there.
