Set map styles and icons

A map style decides how every network map, documented diagram, and export draws its links: the color, width, and line of each kind of link, and whether faster links are drawn wider. It also sets what an exported drawing carries around it, and which icon each device gets. Set it once for your organization. On the MSP plan, a client can override any part of it, for example to match a client’s own cabling color code.

Outpost ships with defaults that follow common cabling conventions, so you only need to change what your practice does differently.

  • Changing styles and icons needs network_map:manage. Anyone with discovery:read can see them.
  • A change applies the next time a map is drawn or exported. Diagrams already saved keep the styles they were drawn with until you redraw them. See Keep documented network diagrams.
  1. Go to Settings > Network maps.
  2. Under Link styles, for each kind of link you want to change, set the Color, the Width (0.5 to 8), and the Line: Solid, Dashed, Dotted, or Double. Preview shows the result.
  3. Select Save.

Each link gets one style, picked in this order: its media when Outpost knows it, else its role, such as a trunk or a VPN, else whether it is physical or logical. A link that is inferred or not seen recently is drawn dashed, and a link not seen recently also takes that row’s color. Reset to defaults returns the link styles, speed widths, and sheet options to the shipped defaults. Icons are not affected.

Every width is 1.5 unless the table says otherwise. A link aggregation is drawn 1 wider than its style says.

Under Line width by speed, Draw faster links wider is on by default. A link whose speed Outpost knows is drawn at the width of the highest tier it reaches, instead of its style’s width:

From (Mbps)Width
01
10001.5
100002.5
250003.5
1000005

Change a tier’s values, select Add tier or Remove, then select Save. Turn the switch off to draw every link at its style’s width.

Drawing sheet sets what exported drawings carry around the drawing:

OptionEffect
Title blockThe client, site, view, title, author, date, revision, and “Generated by Outpost”. Live map exports leave the author blank.
Legend of the link styles usedOne row for each kind of link the drawing uses. It appears when a drawing uses two or more.
Revision table on documented diagramsThe last 10 revisions, with date, author, and note.
Practice logo in the title blockThe Logo set under Branding in your sales settings, when you have one.
PaperLetter, Tabloid, A4, or A3, for PDF exports.
OrientationLandscape or Portrait, for PDF exports.
FooterOne line of text, up to 200 characters.

Select Save when you are done.

On the MSP plan, each client can have its own style. What it does not set follows Settings > Network maps.

  1. Go to Clients and open the client.
  2. In Network map style, change the rows you want. A row the client has not changed shows Inherited.
  3. Select Save.

Select Reset on a row to inherit it again, or Use the practice style to clear the whole override.

Each device on a map is drawn with its kind’s icon. Add your own to show a vendor’s logo or a specific model.

  1. Under Icons, choose an Image: PNG, WebP, or SVG, at most 64 KiB and 512 by 512 pixels.
  2. Enter a Name.
  3. Choose what the icon is for. Set any of Device kind, Vendor, and Model. A device uses the icon only when everything you set matches it. Vendor and model match what discovery or SNMP reports for the device, ignoring case. With none set, the list shows Only devices it is chosen for, and the icon appears in the Outpost devices library of the diagram editor for you to place by hand.
  4. Select Add icon.

When several icons match a device, it uses the first of: an icon chosen for it in the diagram editor, then one matching its model, then its vendor, then its kind. At each step a client’s own icon comes before the practice’s.

To add an icon for one client only, add it in the client’s Network map style panel instead. Practice icons are listed there with Practice and can be deleted only from Settings > Network maps.

PNG and WebP icons are stored as PNG. An SVG icon is cleaned before it is stored, and one holding scripts, links, embedded images, or references to other files is refused with the reason. PNG and PDF exports draw an SVG icon that uses only plain shapes and solid colors, and the device’s kind icon otherwise.

Open Endpoints > Network map on the Physical (L1) view. Links whose media Outpost knows follow your colors, faster links are wider, and devices that match an icon show it.
