Edit link details
Each link on the network map carries what Outpost could learn about it: the ports at each end, the media and speed, the VLANs it carries, and whether it is part of a link aggregation. Where Outpost cannot see a fact, or sees it wrong, you can set it by hand. A cable ID you enter appears on the map and in every export, so the drawing matches the labels in the cabinet.
Before you begin
Section titled “Before you begin”- Reading link details needs
discovery:read. Editing them needsnetwork_map:edit. - Media, speed, link aggregation, and trunk VLANs come from managed switches that Outpost polls over SNMP, and from endpoints’ network adapters. Both need a recent agent. See Where the map comes from.
Open a link’s details
Section titled “Open a link’s details”- On Endpoints > Network map, select a device at one end of the link.
- Under Links in its details, select the device at the other end.
The Link panel shows the two ends, then:
- Confirmed or Inferred, and the evidence, such as Confirmed by LLDP, Inferred from the switch’s MAC address table, or Inferred from the default gateway.
- Not seen recently when the evidence is more than 7 days old.
- Edited by a technician when one or more facts were set by hand.
| Fact | What it shows |
|---|---|
| Ports | The interface at each end, and the access or native VLAN. |
| Media | Single-mode fiber, a multimode fiber grade, copper, direct-attach copper, or wireless. |
| Speed | The negotiated or configured speed, such as 10 Gb/s. Where both ends report one, the faster is shown. |
| Link aggregation | The port channel and how many member ports it has, such as Po1, 2 member ports. Outpost draws the members as one link. |
| VLANs | The VLANs a trunk carries. |
| Role | Trunk, Link aggregation, or Stack link, as Outpost found them, or WAN, VPN, or HA sync on a drawn diagram. |
| Cable ID | The cable label you entered. |
| Notes | Your notes. They are not drawn. |
None recorded. means Outpost does not know the fact and nobody has set it.
How media is worked out
Section titled “How media is worked out”Outpost reads the transceiver type a switch reports for the port. Long-reach optics such as LX, LR, ER, ZR, and BX are single-mode fiber. SX and SR optics are multimode: OM3/OM4 at 10 Gb/s or faster, otherwise OM1/OM2. BASE-T ports are copper, and CR ports are direct-attach copper. An endpoint’s Ethernet adapter is copper unless it reports fiber, and its Wi-Fi adapter is wireless.
OM5 fiber cannot be told apart from OM3 and OM4 this way. Set it by hand.
Set a link’s details by hand
Section titled “Set a link’s details by hand”What you save wins over what Outpost finds, until you clear it. Fields you leave empty keep what Outpost finds.
-
Open the link’s details and select Edit link details.
-
Fill in what you know:
Field Enter Media The cable or optic type. Use what Outpost finds leaves it to Outpost. Speed (Mb/s) A whole number of megabits per second, from 1 to 10000000. 1000 is 1 Gb/s. Cable ID The cable’s label as printed on it, up to 64 characters, for example HQ-A01-0042. A TIA-606 style identifier works well.Label Text drawn on the link, up to 200 characters. Notes Anything else, up to 2000 characters. -
Select Save.
The map redraws with your details, and the link shows Edited by a technician. The details are kept with the link even while it is missing from the map, so they come back if the link does.
To go back to what Outpost finds, open Edit link details and select Clear saved details.
Verify
Section titled “Verify”The link’s details show your values and Edited by a technician. On the Physical (L1) view, the link’s line follows the media’s color and the speed’s width in your map style.
