Manage payment methods and billing address

Outpost charges the default payment method on your account automatically when each invoice is issued. This page shows the account owner how to add a card or US bank account, choose which one is the default, remove one, and keep the billing address that sales tax is calculated from.

  • You must be the account owner. Anyone else sees Only the account owner can manage billing.
  • Outpost accepts cards and United States bank accounts.
  • Card and bank details are entered on Stripe’s secure page. Outpost never sees or stores full card or account numbers.

By adding a payment method you authorize Outpost, through Stripe, to charge it for each invoice when it is issued, and to retry a payment that fails. For a bank account this is a recurring ACH debit authorization. The Terms of Service set out the full authorization, and removing the method revokes it for future invoices.

  1. Sign in to the Outpost portal. See Sign in to the Outpost portal.
  2. In the portal navigation, select Account details.
  3. On the Billing and cancellation card, select Payment methods and invoices.

The Billing page has three cards: Payment methods, Billing address, and Invoices.

  1. On the Payment methods card, select Add a card or bank account. Stripe’s page opens.
  2. Enter the card or bank details, and the billing address.
  3. Confirm on Stripe’s page. You return to the Billing page, which says Your payment method was saved. A bank account can take a moment to appear while it is verified.

The method you add becomes the default, and Outpost emails the account owner that a payment method was added.

For a bank account, Stripe verifies the account, either straight away through your bank or with small test deposits that you confirm. Until it is verified, the method shows Verifying and cannot be charged.

If you leave Stripe’s page without finishing, the Billing page says No payment method was added.

Each saved method shows its type and last four digits, and a card shows its expiry date. The one that is charged is marked Default.

  • To charge a different method, select Make default beside it.

A bank account that is still Verifying cannot be made the default.

  1. Select Remove beside the method.
  2. Select Remove followed by the method’s name to confirm, or Keep to cancel.

On a paid plan you cannot remove the default method while the subscription is running. Add another method and make it the default first.

Sales tax is calculated from your billing address, so an invoice on a paid plan is not issued until one is on file. Stripe’s page collects it when you add a payment method. Home Lab never needs one.

  1. On the Billing address card, select Add address or Edit address.
  2. Enter Address line 1, City, and Country code, the two-letter country code such as US. Address line 2 (optional), State or region, and Postal code complete the address where your country uses them.
  3. Select Save address.

If no address is on file, the card says No billing address is on file. Sales tax is calculated from it, so invoices wait for one.

If your organization is exempt from sales tax, contact support with a current exemption certificate.

The Payment methods card lists the method with Default beside it, and the Billing address card shows your address. On the portal dashboard, the notice asking you to add a payment method is gone.
